Elizabeth Building near Downtown Honolulu. I love this place. It’s just a simple white block with some windows.
Pixlr-o-matic App Effects:
Film: Agnes
Light: Subtle
Frame: Sloppy
Three pics tweaked with Pixlr-o-matic for Android. I can’t get enough of messing around with photo apps for Android, and with this one in particular.
1. Northern coast of Maui. The deep greens play well with the filters and the black beach contrasts sharply with the turbulent white water. Uses the Peter color filter, Metal effect and Swollen frame.
2. An art installation at University of Hawaii - Manoa. Don’t know what it is, I didn’t take the picture myself. This one uses the Ivan color filter, Devine effect and Dirt frame.
3. Iao Needle on Maui. I like the framing and how the deep greens get tweaked by the filters. This uses the Sophia color filter, Subtle effect and Rustic frame.
The Black Keys’ “Lonely Boy” off El Camino is a great single, but “Little Black Submarines” has become my favorite track on this album. Maybe they’re having it both ways, with the first half nice and softly acoustic, then turning into the fuzzy hard rocking that recalls their early albums. That transitioning riff reminds me of the opening on Dan Auerbach’s “Heartbroken, In Disrepair” from his solo album Keep It Hid. I’m not a musician, so the connection may be as simple as “I can’t get enough of either.”
I’m getting burned out on infographics lately, but at least this one is simple and to the point. And it conveys an important message. Read and share.
Jens Lekman just released a great new EP. Five tracks, each a winner in its own way. So now I’m listening to some older stuff.
From the first time I heard this one it’s been my favorite. It’s the funniest song on Oh You’re So Silent Jens. But it’s not really comedy. After a few minutes of melancholy, and what I think is some foreshadowing when he rhymes “beer” with “atmosphere,” Jens drops in a line that takes me completely out of the sad mood and makes me laugh every time.
Here’s one very innocent example. The rule holds true for much darker subjects as well.
USS Ronald Reagan docked at Pearl Harbor. Impressive sight. Lots of jets and helicopters on deck.
Finally tried out the Pano app on my phone. Next time I gotta remember not to start with the main object of the photo. Duh.
On November 15 new old tracks will be released. Many thanks to NPR’s All Songs Considered for once again bringing something exciting to my attention. Here’s the website where you can get a 2-song streaming preview.
Sunday afternoon delight with some Duvel. This was the last one in the fridge. That’s less delightful.
Bon Iver recently played the 9:30 Club in D.C. NPR recorded the whole thing and it’s up on their site now to stream or download.
You can also get it on iTunes via their Live Concerts from All Songs Considered Podcast. Subscribe to that and never miss a great concert again. Even better, go back and download previous shows. Tallest Man on Earth, for example.
Great set list for the Bon Iver show:
That’s right, massive increases in piracy of Fox shows. Hulu has always been a poor man’s DVR for me. Most of the stuff I want to watch is available there, mostly the next day. But not Fox. House has always been delayed 8 days. Sons of Anarchy on FX was delayed a ridiculous 45 days last season. How many people wait that long? But at least Fox will let you watch online. Good luck to you if you miss Breaking Bad or Mad Men on AMC.
Love this image from the Techcrunch post:
New video for Bon Iver’s “Holocene.” Beautiful song in a beautiful setting. Though I have to wonder, is it possible to shoot a shitty-looking video in Iceland? As long as you have a decent truck to get out into the countryside it seems all that’s left to do is turn the camera on.
Kinda like using Will Ferrell in a TV spot. Not much left to do for creative at that point.
